Plastic Tax

Plastic tax

The media has been plastering us with news on plastics polluting the sea and damaging nature.

When the media usually make such a fuss a knee jerk reaction would be a tax on the average person from a politician who is not in touch with the average person.

I had to question who is throwing their plastic in the ocean ?

Does the average everyday guy drive down to the sea and throw his rubbish in?

We give our plastics and rubbish, which are now in separate containers to be disposed of we pay for this disposal service and pay for the plastic bag and tax on the product and it is then dumped by a large company in the sea or sent to another country to be put in a landfill.

Shouldn’t a company that is producing these damaging products change their packaging or pay for disposal? Since they can afford it off all the profits they make instead of passing it down on to the consumer as is always the case. The story being used at the moment has gathered research from a yacht race so it would seem as usual it is ok whilst it is not affecting the rich but once it gets involved in their world something needs to be done.

Microbeads

The issue of microbeads have also been mentioned as a damaging factor to the environment I’ve only purchased a product once that contained these beads and wondered what happened to them once they went down the drain. I thought they must break down naturally within a reasonable amount of time or it is filtered out when they produce our water, however I am lead to believe that the product makes it through all the processes and ends up in the sea damaging nature because fish eat it and then the product goes down the chain once another fish eats that fish contaminating each other and comes back to us in an edible form.

Consequences for humans

Research has suggested that the contamination is leading to more allergic reactions, cancer and even infertility. For vegans they must be having a field day saying “we told you so” because if we eat greens rather than fish and sea creatures we wouldn’t get contaminated. As with anything if you pollute it with something eventually that pollution is going to cause a problem, I am not sure what companies thought would happen with the rubbish they dump in the ocean did they think it would dissolve or somehow go the bottom of the ocean or was it simply a case of by the time anything bad happens to the world I won’t be around to see it so it doesn’t matter.

Solution

I would suggest a tax on products that use plastic is not going to help it’s just going to drain the average person even more and go to companies to make even more profit. The government should look into better ways of disposal obviously burning it would cause to much pollution in terms of gases emitted but there must be some kind of laser or as strange as this may sound what would happen if locals of say Hawaii that have volcano’s dumped a certain amount in a volcano wouldn’t it just dissolve and let off less emissions than burning would? Without activating the volcano or the same energy produced to make space rockets fly can be used to incinerate a certain amount of plastic waste.
